Sunset Bay Property Owners Assist Union County High School Students
By Margaret LaWare
Several years ago, a scholarship fund was established on behalf of the property owners in the Sunset Bay Development in Sharps Chapel. Since then, the fund has assisted numerous Union High School students with the costs associated with college tuition, books and housing. The $3,000 fund provides two, $1,500 one time scholarships to students enrolled in Union County High School and who have been accepted by an accredited college or university or any Trade/Tech/Vocational school that results in state certification. Awards are based on scholastic merit, community service and financial need. Applications were made available to students in March and were reviewed by fund committee members in April. Subsequent interviews determined the two award recipients; Elizabeth Hungate and Carrie Thomas, both of Maynardville.
Elizabeth “Izzy” Hungate will be attending the University of Tennessee where she will major in pre med. Once she graduates from UT, Elizabeth plans to attend Medical School at Vanderbilt after which she ultimately hopes to become a cardiovascular surgeon. Elizabeth has received numerous honors and awards, is highly active in the community and is the first in her family to attend college.
Carrie Thomas will be attending Lincoln Memorial University and plans to graduate with a degree in nursing, specializing in neonatal care. Carrie is one of four 2010 class valedictorians, ranking second in her class of 154. She is very involved with church activities and has strong family ties.
The scholarships were announced at the Union County High School Senior Luncheon on May 25th at Calhouns’ On The River. For more information about the scholarship fund, please contact chairperson, Margaret LaWare at pidfrank@centurytel.net.
